  1. Calling all potential SAF advertising executives!

Each year the Communications Committee develops a newspaper advertisement that gets the Wisconsin Society of American Foresters name out to the public. We buy space in the Wausau Daily Herald forestry supplement. Our budget allows us to buy space in the one paper, but we could advertise in more areas if funds are available.

View advertisements for the last four years. What you can come up with for this year?  All ideas will be considered and appreciated. Email them to Jim Kerkman. This is your society. How would you introduce SAF to the public?

  1. The Wisconsin SAF Student Mentor Program is designed to encourage university forestry students to become SAF members and to become better acquainted with professional foresters active in SAF.  The Wisconsin SAF Mentor program began January 1, 1992 and is conducted on an annual basis. More information is available (Word Doc 37KB).

  1. The Wisconsin SAF Forester's Fund Grant: Do you have an idea for a project that would:

    • Promote education to enhance public understanding of the role of professional foresters?

    • Assist in forest policy activities?

    • Strengthen the State society or local Chapter in achieving the mission of SAF?

If so, funding through the Foresters’ Fund may be available to assist in your efforts. Regular and special grants from $500 to $5,000 may be available. Find out more (Word Doc 26KB).

  1. Scout Merit Badges

Encourage Girl Scouts in your community to earn a forestry badge. View criteria to earn the patch here.

To find a Girl Scout council for your area, click the logo:

Help Boy Scouts earn the Forestry merit badge.  You can organize a special forestry camp-o-ree that will feature activities to complete badge requirements or volunteer as a merit badge counselor.

You will find a map and Wisconsin Boy Scout council contact information here.  You can also go to http://www.scouting.org/nav/enter.jsp?c=xm and scroll down to the council contact link.  Once there it will ask for your zip code and then give you the council that services your area.  The council locator is also included in the scouting main page at http://www.scouting.org and click on the link “local councils” on the fourth line from the top.

A list of the Forestry Merit Badge requirements is here.  You can also go to http://www.meritbadge.com/home.htm and click on merit badge requirements.  When registering with a council as a merit badge counselor you may decide to add other merit badges you are qualified to cover.
