The History of SAF: 100 Years of Forestry in the United States

" I believe that there is no body of men who have it in their power today to do a greater service to the country than those engaged in the scientific study of, and practical application of, approved methods of forestry for the preservation of the woods of the United States."  THEODORE ROOSEVELT, 1903

The Society of American Foresters has been dedicated to improving the health and productivity of America 's forests for over 100 years. Gifford Pinchot and six other pioneer foresters founded the Society of American Foresters (SAF) in 1900.  The science of forestry was established in the United States at the turn of the century, at a time when vast areas of forests had been cut down with little thought of the future. Foresters have done a magnificent job in restoring America’s forests.  SAF members – men AND women – continue to reflect the profession’s commitment to the enduring truth of President Roosevelt’s words.

Wisconsin Society of American Foresters began in 1919 and we are celebrating our 85th anniversary during 2004. Visit the Wisconsin Forestry Hall of Fame online to read about leaders in Wisconsin's forest history. Additional leaders in Wisconsin conservation are noted in the Wisconsin Conservation Hall of Fame.
